I was voter number 7 in line, so I was able to cast my “gender” vote quickly. There were two ballot boxes at the school where I vote, and one of them was down (it was sitting there like an abandoned R2D2, emitting an electronic beeping sound every few seconds). If they don’t get that baby fixed, they are going to have one hellish day come lunchtime or after work.

Damn! I missed it…the Josh Ritter Live at the Artists’ Den already aired on Ovation. If, like me, you missed it, it will re-air on February 21st. Here’s a clip (courtesy of ovationtv.com):

…We’d like to thank you once again!

February 3rd, 2008 · 1 Comment

I nearly hit the floor when my friend Ben gave me this painstakingly and lovingly made reconstruction of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album cover, as a farewell tribute to my teenage record store, who has flown the nest after 16 and a half years.

Ryan writes Carolina. Elton sings it.

January 20th, 2008 · No Comments

A live recording by Elton John of Ryan Adams’ “Oh, My Sweet Carolina,” from EJ’s 2002 Australian tour. Great performance and piano-playing, despite the Muppet-hands. The lyrics have a startling similarity to those from the early John/Taupin compositions, which I assume Ryan Adams has a fondness for.

Screenings: The music of Atonement

January 17th, 2008 · No Comments

Music permeates every moment of this movie. The sounds of objects in the film ricochet off of the musical score like instruments in a contrapuntal symphony: the click of a cigarette lighter, overhead lights being switched on in an infirmary corridor, the busy clacking of the typewriter keys and wrrrrhh of the platen as the paper is ripped from the carriage.
