My Precious Darling Wife:
Just a couple lines tonight Mary Darling to let you know that I am well and getting along the same as ever. I miss you so awful much, Mary, and I love you so much. I can’t find words to tell you.
Well Mary Darling we are still working on the plane but we have it about finished now. The sheet metal men are the only ones that have much work.
Darling this place is a lot better than Orly. We get the best food here that I have seen since I have been in the Army, and I sure get my share of fresh milk. Mary Darling I drink about a quart every meal.
Dearest I believe that I will be gaining a little weight before very long. I only wish that you could be here with me. If you were Darling every thing would be just perfect. Mary Darling I miss your letters so awful much and Darling I know you are feeling the same way. Darling please try not to worry about me so much. I am taking very good care of my self for you. You mean every thing in the world to me Mary and you will for ever.
Well Darling I still haven’t found a way to mail my letters yet. I only hope that there is a plane going back to the base or something soon so I can mail this. I hear they mean a lot to you. I saw an order posted on the bulletin board here that said they are taking the first shipment of wives to the states the 5th of this month. Mary Darling I only hope that you can get to go over soon. It would be so wonderful if we could both get home at the same time. Mary please let me know as soon as you get any word about going. Will you send me a telegram or something Darling, for a letter takes so awful long to get to me. It has been so long since I heard from you. I only hope I had some way of getting my mail up here. I should have a lot of your precious letters back at the base now. The last one I received was the 13th one you wrote. I only hope that you have received more of my letters, and that none of them are missing.
Well Darling last night I went along to town with a fellow and we walked around the place a while. I took two cartons of cigarettes with me and the other fellow had a carton. Darling you should of seen us getting rid of them. I got 160 kroners for the ones I had. That is a little over 8 pounds, so Darling I guess I made a good day wages. I came up here with a hundred and now I have 418 kroners. We were standing in the street and the fellows kept coming up and asking if we had any cigarettes to sell. They only wanted to give 75 kroners a carton and I said 80 or I would keep them. Darling they kept coming up on their prices till I got what I wanted, but it took us till 10 or 10:30 before we sale all we had.
We went and bought a few things afterward. I got 3 little spoons with pictures of different buildings and the name of the town on them. Just wait till you see them Darling. They sure are nice. I want to get 3 more the next time I go in.
Well Darling after we got the spoons we were kind of hungry so we went in a place and had some cream cake. Mary I wish I could bring some of it to you. It is a cake about ½ in thick with a layer of whipped cream, then another layer of cake and then about 1 inch of more whipped cream and cherries. Boy but it is good. We were still hungry so we got some ice cream with whipped cream. Then after we finished eating we came back to the base.
Well Darling I guess that is all we done yesterday. Today I did not do much work for all the mechanics work is finished. There was a movie here in the day room this evening so I went. Darling I only wish you could of seen it. Laurel and Hardy played in one and the name of the other was “Keep your Powder dry.” It was a good show. It was about three girls joining the W.ACs. It was sure comic. The fellow that was sitting behind me was about doubled up laughing. There was supposed to have been 3 shows but they only showed two.
Darling while we are here we get liquor rations. I got a quart of whiskey or snapps for 5 kroners and if I take the bottle back I get 2 kroners back. I think I will take it back to Paris to the base and make a little on it for I don’t drink it, and Darling you don’t ever have to worry about me starting.
Well Darling I guess I will have to make this short letter and get ready for bed. I love you with all my hart Mary and Darling I pray every night that we are together very soon. I love you so awful much.
Your loving and very Lonely husband
Harry

Now-classic shoe-eating and dinner roll scenes sparkle, but the best moments come from Chaplin’s innocent romance.

My Own Precious Darling:
Just a few lines tonight Mary to let you know that I love you so awful much. I only wish that I could be with you. I miss you so awful much. I pray that this finds you feeling allright, and getting along fine. I am getting along O.K. over here so far. There are 4 of us working on the plane now. 2 sheet metal men and two mechanics. The sheet metal men are the only ones that have any work to do now so the other two of us are taking things easy. We had to wait till about 9 o’clock this morning before we could get a jeep to go to work in. We got up this morning about 7:30 and went to chow. We had fresh eggs and sausage, then after we eat we came back to our room so one of the fellows could get some cigarettes, after that we went out to the plane and worked till a little after eleven. Then Darling we came back to dinner. For dinner we had roast pork and potatoes, and about a quart of milk apiece, and ice cream. After dinner we went back to work. The Lt. came out about 7 o’clock and they ran the plane up to see how it was. I guess he is satisfied with it. We just work about 4 and came back to the barrex and cleaned up so we could go to town. Two of us went to chow first. We took a few more cigarettes in to sell. I had twelve packs and I got 98 coronor [sic]. That is a little over 5 pounds. That was not bad for one night, was it, Darling? I came up here with a hundred coronor to start with and I have 290 now, and I have three more cartons of cigarettes to git rid of and that will be about 240 or more coronor. If I can I want to buy a few things while I am here. Darling you should see what all they have over here in the stores, and nothing is rationed. After we came out of the show tonight we were looking in the windows of the stores. We went in a place to eat and I had ice cream with a lot of whipped cream and a big slice of cream pie with cherries on. Boy but it was good. We came back to the base about 9:30 tonight.
Darling I only wish that you could be here with me. I never saw a place where they have so many good things to eat before in my life. Darling you could eat even if you were not hungry when you saw what they have.
Mary Darling please promise me that you will eat all you can and Darling don’t miss so many meals. I want you to take real good care of your self for me. I don’t want the wind to blow you away. I love you so awful much.
Mary Darling did you get all the letters I wrote you from Orly? I only hope you did for I know what they all mean to you. I know that your precious letters mean every thing to me.
Darling have you received any more letters from Mom or Kenny? I never got around to answering the last letter I got from Mom and Kenny. I suppose they will be wondering what happened to me. I only hope we both get to go to the States soon so we can forget about writing to each other.
The only ones we will have to write to then will be Mom and Dad. I only wish that I could be there with you now so I could see all three of them. I miss them all and especially Jimmy.
Say Darling, have you ever got your suit from the taylor yet? I only hope you have and you like it, and Mary Darling you never told me how you liked the jacket and skirt you had dyed.
Darling I don’t know if you can make any sense of this letter. It is hard for me to write when I am not getting any of your letters. This makes the 3rd one I have wrote since I have been here and there is no place to mail them. I guess I will have to wait till I get back to Orly. I should have a lot of your letters waiting for me there now.
Darling please let me know if you get word to go to the States. I am praying that we are both over there this month or early next month.
I am thinking of you every second Darling and I don’t want a thing to do with another girl so Mary Darling you don’t have to worry about me. I am yours for ever and ever. I love you with all my heart and sole Mary. I only hope we are together for good very soon. I need you so awful much.
Your loving and very lonely Husband,
Harry

Looks and has tone of the film that obviously inspired its style (Barry Lyndon), similarly concerned with honor of men.
