Until I was 12 the fine, sugar sand beaches of the northern Gulf of Mexico were all I knew. Imagine the shock my siblings and I experienced on our first viewing of the San Diego beaches. We thought the southern California beaches were dirty because of the darker color of the sand. The first time I stepped on an Atlantic coast beach I felt like I was strolling on a pebble walkway. I now understand the differences in color and texture, but I’ll still take the Gulf coast any time.
