Today’s film, which was a crackerjack. It’s a 1937 early film noir, directed by the great Fritz Lang (only his second American film). Henry Fonda does a great job as an ex-convict trying to go straight, but gets pushed back into his old ways due in great part to societal rejection. You can see the desperation of Tom Joad from his 1939 The Grapes of Wrath beginning to take shape here. Highly recommended, despite the bleak ending. Wonderful, shadowy camera work, as well.

I didn’t realize Jean Dixon was an actress before she started telling horoscopes. 🙂

She predicted this movie would be a hit, but it ended up losing money.
