Spitball Army

On a sunny Friday in January 1985, I sketched this while sitting on the steps of the State House in Boston. There must have been something of a chill in the air, judging by the woman’s coat. The bas-relief sculpture on the right, completed in 1897, was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, an Irish-born American sculptor.

This vintage postcard pictures a “storm, Oceanside, Calif.,” and is prettified with green and blue washes of watercolor. Storms at sea are quite a bit darker than this, but I imagine there wouldn’t be much of a market for a postcard that had dark and forbidding beaches on its front. The postmark on the back of the postcard is 1 September 1913 – for a look at a storm at the Oceanside Pier nearly a decade later, see the shot I took – below – in December of last year.

I went over to Atlanta a few hours early last Tuesday, before dinner and the Josh Ritter concert, planning to do some exploring in the High Art Museum.

When I got up, slightly past 6, I went directly to the kitchen and put the coffee on. One look out the window and I could see that the landscape had changed in just 60 minutes. I grabbed my camera and walked out onto the front porch.
