My South: S is for Signs of the painted variety

Barber Shop_RESIZED

In just a two-block area of Avondale, I spied most of these sights. The painted wall advertisement seems to have had a lively life in this small enclave of old brick buildings. Avondale “Center” had, until the past few years, been populated mainly by used car lots, rundown gas stations and crumbling buildings. Things have been changing at an accelerated pace. The mass of dried and chipping paint around the barber shop sign above is on the side of Saw’s Soul Kitchen, one of a handful of hip new eateries on the Avondale “strip.”

Babe's Hot Dogs_RESIZED

Babe’s Hot Dogs (the sign, and maybe the hot dog joint – I wasn’t looking for hot dogs) is not in Avondale, but over the tracks on 1st Avenue North.

The Wheelock building is on 2nd Avenue South, just a shake from Avondale.

Wall Sign with Crape Myrtles_RESIZED

Above, in Irondale. I challenge you to decipher that sign.
